Local Soldiers Laid To Rest

Three locally based soldiers have been laid to rest after their repatriation earlier this month.

The funerals of Corporal William Savage and Fusilier Samuel Flint of 2Scots and Private Robert Hetherington of 7Scots have been held after they were killed on routine patrol in Afghanistan.

The three Glencorse based soldiers were killed after their six wheeled Mastiff hit an improvised explosive device in the Nahr-e Saraj province of Afghanistan. All three were evacuated by air to a military hospital at Camp Bastion where they later died from the injuries they sustained.

Private Robert Hetherington was remembered first in a ceremony at Canongate Kirk on the Royal Mile. The funeral was closed to the media at the families request. The Private was later interred in Dumfriesshire. He was originally from the USA but he was raised in Scotland.

The next ceremony was that of Corporal William Savage, who’s funeral was held at Glencorse Kirk in Penicuik. His pregnant wife Lyndsey watched as his comrades remembered the life of the fallen servicemen. His coffin left to a track by LMFAO.

Late last week Fusilier Samuel Flint was interred near Blackpool, where he originated from.

Their death’s have been described as a “hammer blow” to the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
