A new radio station has been granted permission to start operating within Penicuik and the region.

Crystal FM was officially given permission by Ofcom to start operating a community radio station on 20 September. The new station will be run and managed by the Penicuik Community Education Association. An application to start operating was submitted after Ofcom turned down a request to add a repeater of Black Diamond FM in our area. We spoke to Colin Mcall of Penicuik Community Eductaion Association back in April and here is what he had to say:

We feel the area is underserved as far as local radio is concerned and hope we are given the opportunity to provide a voluntary service via Crystal FM.

Ofcom suggested that the best way forward was for a local corporate body to apply for a licence to serve the Penicuik area so a radio steering group was formed and an application submitted.

They have been granted a license for five years. Within these five years they intend to keep the public entertained with a mix of music and discussions about local events and issues. The whole community will be included with chances for local drama groups and both high schools to get involved with the production of the new station. Other community groups are advised to contact the PCEA for more information on how they can help each other.

We’ll hopefully have more information for you soon!
