New Dawn For BCHS?

Beeslack Community High School are to launch a consultation imminently about the restructuring of the school day, management and support structure.

Under new plans, which have been drawn up after the Scottish government implemented their new Curriculum, the “Curriculum For Excellence”, the school day will change dramatically. To accommodate these changes the school day will be elongated by five minutes to 15:55. In addition to this the local high school aims to implement a ‘house system’ which will see every pupil in the school being placed in a ‘house’ which will be governed by a senior member of staff, who will undertake no other duties apart from tending to their house’s pupils.

The plans however do not stop there. For the first time third and fourth year groups will be given a set amount of time for an extra subject or extra curricular activity. Senior year groups have had this opportunity for years. Finally a mentor will be assigned to each pupil who will dedicate a period a week to helping their pupils. This mentor will be with the child from entry to exit of high school.

As previously mentioned a consultation will commence shortly with a parents’ information evening for S1 and S2 planned for next week. A date has yet to be set for the remaining years.

School ‘Houses’ used to be enforced in BCHS but they were retired. It is believed their names will change from Lomond, Glentress and Pentland if the new structure is approved.

We have outlined the new day structure below.
