Penicuik’s Older People Get Their Say

The seventh Scottish Older People’s Assembly (SOPA) will take place this October and residents in Penicuik have an opportunity to table their views.

On Friday 15 August between 2pm and 3:30pm at the Cowan Court Community Hub, the SOPA tour of Scotland will be asking the views of local older people on the following question: If you had the chance to speak at the Scottish Older People’s Assembly in the Scottish Parliament, what one action would you request to benefit older people in Scotland?

The issues raised during Friday’s meeting, which will be opened by the Provost of Midlothian, may be taken to the Assembly and discussed before being passed on to the Scottish Government. Tom Berney, SOPA chair said:

It is important the older people of Midlothian make their voice heard. This forum will deal with many important issues.

Continuing Mr Berney said it was important that politicians and communities recognised “the longevity dividend”, the asset which older people bring to society and the contribution they make to their community.

That is why Shona Robison, the Minister for Pensioners Rights, has asked us to discuss and comment on possible future policies. We have a fantastic opportunity to be integrated into policy making and influence it.

Whilst all issues are considered, this year’s assembly will focus mainly on fuel poverty, isolation and loneliness, standards of care and pensions.

Everyone over the age of sixty is welcome to attend and have their say. If you are unable to attend, you can still have your say through various mediums, the SOPA website (www.Scotopa.org.uk), Facebook (www.Facebook.com/Scotopa), Twitter (@Scotopa) and email (acfaa@edinburgh.gov.uk).
