Penicuik’s new Youth Band are preparing to march amongst their older friends and family for the town’s annual parade in May.
They have been eagerly practising through a series of local events over the past months for the big day. The past month saw them hold a successful craft fair in St Mungo’s hall, that not only raised £537 but also gave them a chance to show the local community their talents, a theme that was continued in Carlops as part of West Linton’s annual children’s festival. Both performances were well received.
Continuing on this impressive trend, four youth band members played for Penicuik Silver Band in the Scottish National Brass Band Championships last Saturday, where they came in a respectable sixth place. Another member, Jamie, has also just achieved Grade 1 in Cornet, playing with distinction.
Penicuik Youth Band work’s closely with Midlothian School’s Music Service – to an agreed teaching programme – and has held a number of recruitment concerts in local primary schools in the last two years which have been well received and the band has members form Cuiken, Cornbank, Mauricewood, Sacred Heart, Roslin and West Liinton Primaries as well as Penicuik High School.

In a step towards the big march day, the next fund-raising event is a tombola and sale of second-hand toys at Penicuik on Parade. Donations for the tombola and second-hand toys can be left at the band which meets at the Carnethy Centre in Mauricewood Primary school Monday:
6.30 to 7.30: Lessons for ‘New Recruits’ 7.30 to 8.00: ‘Joint Band’ with the senior band , and Thursday 6.00 to 7.00 Rehearsal for Youth Band.
So if you’re out to watch Penicuik On Parade on Saturday 25 March, look out for them playing alongside Penicuik Silver Band.
