The Peni Deli on Penicuik’s High Street has ceased trading and is now up to let after years of trading.
Located on High Street, the cafe and delicatessen also diversified to offer outside catering services. However facing new competition from a neighbouring italian restaurant, along with other new eateries in the area, it is believed that the business was struggling.
The business’ premises at 3a High Street are now up to let for £17,000 per annum. It is noted that the cafe can sit thirty people.
The Scottish Government’s planning appeal body recently overturned Midlothian Council’s refusal to allow a unit opposite to the Peni Deli to operate as a hot food takeaway. During the application’s consultation, the Peni Deli signed a petition calling for the application to be refused. Citing the lack of difference the hot food takeaway would make to the town centre, the government granted owner’s Scotmid’s appeal.
There are now four hot food or restaurants up to let within a 500 metre radius from High Street.
On a positive note, Penicuik’s former co-operative building at 6-10 High Street is either partially or wholly under offer. Estate Agents Knight Frank have advised us that the new owner will not be a national chain.
